Crash Data

In ranking from The Zebra, an insurance comparison site, Florida ranked in the top 10 for states with the most fatal crashes in the United States. The state saw almost 400,000 crashes with approximately 3,400 deaths and 252,260 injuries in 2023. In 2024, there have been 301,383 total crashes with 2,329 deaths and 194,272 injuries, according to numbers from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ Crash Dashboard, an online dataset that tallies crashes throughout the state and separates them by vehicle type.

In Miami-Dade County, where Friday’s crash took place,  there have been 47,569 crashes in 2024 with 224 fatalities and 23,288 injuries as of Monday.

In nearly five decades of personal injury practice in a state that is among the top ranked for annual crashes, Leesfield & Partners has seen some of the most gruesome crash cases that have irreparably altered the lives of families all over the state. In that time, the firm’s Founder and Managing Partner, Ira Leesfield, has previously supported organizations – such as The Underline and Mothers Against Drunk Driving – with The Leesfield Family Foundation to make Florida roads safer.

Leesfield & Partners

In its 48 years of personal injury practice, Leesfield & Partners has been a part of numerous historical and landmark cases dealing with crashes on Florida roads. One such case involves the tragic death of a prospective medical student and the catastrophic injury to her brother as the family was on their way to drop off their daughter at her medical school’s orientation. As they headed to the airport, a drunk driver speeding down the wrong side of I-95 hit their car head-on. The family lost their daughter and their son suffered brain and orthopedic injuries that would require round-the-clock care for the rest of his life.

A verdict of $95 million was returned from a Miami-Dade County jury for the family’s injuries, resulting in $57 million for the son and $38 million for the parents. This case marks the fourth-largest car accident verdict in state history.

Combining other cases handled by the firm, the result is over $89,400,161 in verdicts and settlements obtained for injured clients and their grieving families by Leesfield & Partners attorneys.

The firm has secured more than $30 million in combined settlements for victims involved in truck crashes, including the tragic death of one girl and the severe injury of two others. The three girls were on their way to the library when a commercial truck driver made an illegal U-turn on the turnpike, turning directly into the lane of the girls’ car. A settlement of over $8.6 million and a wrongful death arbitration award of over $7.9 million was secured by Leesfield & Partners.

Another trucking case involved the amputation of a 26-year-old man’s left arm after a crash. In that case, the man was pulling back onto the road in his box truck, traveling from Jacksonville to Tallahassee on I-10 when he was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler going 70 mph. The truck turned on its driver’s side in the crash where it skidded almost 100 feet.

The defendant’s counsel tried arguing that our client, who was merging at 37 mph, was at fault for going under the speed limit. Countless hours of expert testimony was nullified by Leesfield & Partners attorney’s aggressive cross-examination and our firm obtained nearly double the maximum insurance policy limit of $1 million.

In motorcycle crashes, Leesfield & Partners attorneys have secured over $56 million for injured clients. One such case involved a crash that resulted in the paralysis of a young man when hick Honda motorcycle’s kickstand malfunctioned, sending him careening into a concrete wall when it deployed mid-ride.

A $19.8 million settlement amount was returned by a jury at trial for our 27-year-old client.

Over $26 million has been obtained by the firm for victims of pedestrian and bicycle crashes.
