Amazon Worker Stabbed Saturday in Fort Lauderdale. What to Know.

An Amazon delivery driver was hospitalized with serious injuries following a stabbing while on duty over the weekend, according to reporting from The Miami Herald.

Police were called out to the 1100 block of Northwest 10th Terrace just after 7:30 p.m. to a report of a stabbing. The driver’s vehicle was disabled when they were approached by their alleged assailant.

The driver was taken to Broward Medial Center. Additional details whether anything was taken in the incident or the condition of the driver as of Monday morning were not immediately available.

Negligent Security & Representing Employees

In certain areas with high crime rates, delivery drivers and the merchandise they carry can become targets for theft and robbery, particularly at night. If taken to court, a delivery company could be held liable for their employees’ injuries. If there is a known history of violence or criminal activity in the area where the incident occurred, or if the company did not equip their driver with safety measures such as training, GPS tracking and/or alarm systems, a case could be made that they breached their duty of care to ensure safety for their workers. Companies are required to take reasonable precautions to prevent foreseeable harm to their employees, and failure to do so may be considered negligence.

The general, common-law principle involved with negligent security cases is that there is no duty to protect against harm caused by the acts of a third-party, except when such acts are foreseeable. In that case, certain measures must be taken to prevent such acts from taking place.

A previous case handled by Leesfield & Partners involved a store employee who was raped and robbed at a shopping mall. In that case, there was inadequate security at the mall to ensure the safety of workers, allowing the opportunity for this crime to take place. An award of $1.13 million was secured by Leesfield & Partners in that case.

A hotel housekeeper was brutally raped and assaulted while on the job in Monroe County. Leesfield & Partners secured a $1 million settlement for the client in that case.

Additional Cases

Leesfield & Partners attorneys have been on the leading, national edge within the practice area of negligent security in the United States for nearly five decades. In that time, our attorneys represented individuals harmed at shopping malls, gas stations, hotels and more. Through these multi-million, record-setting verdicts and settlements, Leesfield & Partners has been able to highlight several egregious gaps in security at these locations, bringing some semblance of justice to victims through compensation. Over the years, the firm has secured more than $81 million in combined recoveries for these types of cases.

Justin B. Shapiro, a Partner and Trial Lawyer at the firm, previously secured $16 million for a couple who were attacked while staying at a South Miami hotel with a history of criminal activity and violence. In that case, the attacker was able to enter the hotel, go through the lobby and travel up an elevator to the couple’s floor, all without being questioned or stopped by the hotel’s security or its employees. The attacker knocked on the couple’s door and, when the husband opened it, he launched a violent attack that included a round of punches, choking and a vicious bite to the back of the neck. The ordeal lasted five minutes before the wife, who returned to the room, became his target.

The attacker chased the wife into the hallway where he launched violent punches and knocked her to the ground. Three employees, including security, traveled up to the couple’s floor and did nothing to intervene. The attacker took the wife to the elevator where she was viciously physically and sexually assaulted before he raped her. The nightmare lasted 10 minutes before police finally arrived.

Officers were repeatedly called out to the hotel to address issues of theft, assault and gun violence and despite a mass exodus of fearful employees and recommendations from both a private security company and law enforcement, the hotel’s management did nothing to increase the safety of their guests and workers. One un-armed guard was employed the night of the brutal attack and no locks or other checks were used to ensure unauthorized individuals could not enter the property.

The firm also secured $15 million for the family of an individual killed in an apartment complect shooting in Broward County.

Leesfield & Partners also represented a cruise ship passenger who was raped by a crewmember with access to her cabin. A multi-million-dollar recovery was secured in that case.

Previously, the firm represented a client who was shot while using an unguarded ATM. Our client was paralyzed in the incident. Our attorneys secured $3 million for the injured party in that case.

Leesfield & Partners secured $3.2 million for a college student who was attacked, suffering neurological injuries and paralysis from an incident at his dormitory.
